How to Decorate a Rental Home

When you own your own home, you can decorate and do whatever you like with the walls, carpets, cabinets, counters or anything else.  In your own home, you could glue your granite counter tops to the walls if you wished.  However, when you are living in a rental home, you usually don’t have the same freedoms that you do in an owned house.  In a rental, the walls are usually painted an off white or other neutral basic color.  Typically, your carpet will be a tan colored, medium pile carpet.  Never fear, even if you are renting a home, you can still make the space your own.  The color of your walls and carpets are not the only items that make your style shine.  There are many ways to accent your home so that the plain colored walls and boring carpet are completely unnoticeable.

Choose Your Furniture Carefully

Furniture, in my opinion, is what makes or breaks a room.  The great thing about furniture is it comes in so many varieties.  You can either go with a modern look, a retro throwback or even an elegant, Victorian-inspired look.  No matter what tastes you have, your furniture is one way to display your brilliance.  Even though your furniture should not be super matchy-match, giving the room a clear theme is always wise.  A bright pink chair and a suede leather sofa just do not go together.

Paintings, photos and other wall accents are awesome ways to cover up that dull wall.  While you don’t want every inch of the wall covered, a healthy amount of pictures can give the wall a stylish look.  Do not cover the wall with loose posters.  We are not in high school anymore.  If you want to decorate with movie posters or any other type of poster. try framing them.  Art does not have to be expensive, consider taking your own photos and making large copies of them to frame and hang up.

Give Me a Cool Accent

A pop piece here or there can really brighten a room.  Try looking for throw pillows to place on the sofa to add variety to the room.  Curling up on the sofa with a blanket is comfy.  Get some throw blankets that are warm, pretty and eye catching.  Make sure the coffee table looks classy and has some awesome looking magazines, plants and other accents adorning it.  Figurines, statues and other little accents not only decorate your space but can also tell stories of where you’ve been.

Don’t be afraid to get creative.  Just because you can’t paint the walls the colors of your favorite sports team, does not mean that your home can’t look unique and spunky.  You are who you are, whether you live in a rental or in your own home. Show off who you are in any space.
